Mosquitoes love water, too, so if your yard has improper drainage, this can be the cause of the infestation. Mosquito dunks can be used in standing water. This product lasts 30 days or more and kills mosquitoes quickly. The best part is this doesn’t harm the water or pets, so it’s safe for humans to drink.
Mosquito larvae will die thanks to the dunks.
Before we discuss how to get rid of mosquitoes, we’re going to talk about a special type of repellent.

DEET Mosquito Repellent: A Leading Repellent
DEET is widely used by Americans, and statistics show that 30% (more than 90 million) people use DEET products every year. Rumors that DEET can kill brain cells led to many people mistrusting the product.
But reviews have shown that this product is safe for humans when applied on the skin.

There are 20 years of studies and research demonstrating the safety of this repellent. Anyone that is worried of potential health risks with DEET can choose to apply the product in lower concentrations.
The downside is that a 20% concentration needs to be reapplied more often than the 50% concentration.
Since 1957, 14 children that used DEET died from encephalopathy – that’s in nearly 60 years. The issue is that no one knows for sure if DEET was the cause of the problem or not. Even so, the risks are so minimal that you have a slim chance – if any – that DEET will cause harmful side effects if applied.
We’ll be reviewing a variety of repellents (many contain DEET) below, and then we’re going to discuss a few homemade ways to get rid of mosquitoes.
7 of the Best Mosquito Repellents on the Market
Repel 100 is an insect repellent, and this product is highly effective. Available in one packs, two packs and six packs, Repel 100 is highly affordable and designed for extreme environments. If you plan on fishing in a still pond, for example, this is one of the best products on the market.
You can rest assured that Repel 100, possibly the best repellent with DEET, will keep pests away.
Mosquitoes are repelled with this spray, but so are:
And when using this product, it contains 98.11% DEET, so reapplication is required only once every 10 hours.
Spray the repellent on your skin (adults) or clothes (children), and you’ll be protected from mosquitoes. There is no smell, and the product works.
- Works on numerous insects
- Contains a high level of DEET
- Extremely potent
DEET can be toxic at such high levels, and it can stain clothing in some cases. Some women have stated that when the product came in contact with their nails, the nail polish was destroyed because of the high potency.
But, this product works very well – and it works for 10 hours straight.Buy Now

Repel offers a natural mosquito repellent, too. This repellent uses eucalyptus to repel the mosquito, and it’s DEET – free. A lot of people claim that DEET stains their clothes, so this product was created, and the results are nothing short of impressive.
This product repels:
- Deer ticks
The potency of this product is 30% oil of lemon eucalyptus.
Consumers can buy this product in 1, 2, 4 or 6 packs, and it offers a cool and refreshing scent due to its lemon eucalyptus concentration.
Reapplication is required every 6 hours, so you’ll need to reapply more often than using a DEET-based product.
- Designed to stop staining
- Smells pleasant
What’s interesting about this product is that it’s rather oily. You’ll feel it on your skin, and for some users, this isn’t something that they want to deal with. The vast majority of people won’t find this product to be oily, or it won’t cause a concern for the user.
Note: If this product gets in the eyes, it will burn. Parents are advised to keep the spray away from animals and away from a child’s eyes.
Users are often taken aback by the smell of the eucalyptus, so keep the intense smell in mind.Buy Now

The first mosquito repellent lotion on our list. Lotions are ideal when you worry about getting staining sprays on your clothes, or if you need to apply the lotion to sensitive areas or children. There is no fear of overspray with a lotion.
Developed for the military, 3M tested this lotion in the most demanding environment, and protection is offered for up to 12 hours.
Splash and sweat resistant, you don’t need to fear that this lotion will come off and stop repelling mosquitoes. If you need to get rid of mosquitoes, this is one of the best products on the market.
And it also works to repel deer ticks, chiggers, fleas and gnats.
Lotion offers time release of ingredients, so the release of DEET is highly controlled to never pose a risk to humans.
- Long-lasting at 12 hours
- Withstands sweat and splashes
- Slow release of DEET and ingredients
- Easy to apply and precise
- Greasy or sticky
The lotion is sticky (all DEET products suffer from this), so if you’re the type of person that hates that sticky feeling, this may not be a good option. Gnats seem to stay around, but when it comes to mosquitoes, this product is one of the best.Buy Now

Sawyer offers one of the best repellents on the market, and this product contains 20% Picaridin. If you don’t know what this is, it’s an insect repellent that was designed to be used against a wide range of insects.
What’s neat is you can purchase this product in a spray or lotion. There is an entire gallon option for the lotion, too, so it’s more than enough for a large group of users.
The company states that this product is more effective than DEET-based products, and this is somewhat true. Effectiveness times do vary, and these times include:
- 12 hours – mosquitoes and ticks
- 14 hours – lotion
- 8 hours – flies, chiggers, gnats and fleas
So, if you want to know how to get rid of mosquitoes for more than half a day, the lotion version is highly effective.
- Applies to the skin easily and doesn’t have the oily feeling of DEET
- Ticks and chiggers despise this product – they stay far away
- Lasts 8 – 14 hours, depending on the product type and bug
- The pump spray gets clogged
A small concern is that the pump tends to get clogged. This leads to you having to unclog or stick the pump, which is a quick fix. You can also run the pump under water to try and return the pump to normal function.Buy Now

Another eucalyptus product that is very potent. This product by Cutter utilizes lemon eucalyptus oil to repel mosquitoes, and it’s able to repel the pest for up to 6 hours. This is a good option to apply to your gear or skin to keep pests at bay.
What’s very beneficial is that this product is natural, so you don’t need to worry about harmful ingredients and chemicals finding their way into your skin.
When sweating, this product will perform well, but if you go swimming with it, the spray washes off. Most products, even if they’re waterproof, will wash off in a pool due to the high level of water.
Simply reapply when you get out of the water when using this product.
- Good alternative to DEET
- All-natural product that works well
- Works for over 5 hours with ease
- Doesn’t have a greasy feel on the skin
- Potent smell when first applied
I’ve found that all the lemon eucalyptus products are very potent when first applied. The initial smell is overwhelming. But once it dissipates, the smell is pleasing, which is a nice change compared to DEET-based products.Buy Now

Sawyer also offers a premium clothing repellent that is highly effective. This is a great mosquito repellent for babies because it doesn’t need to be applied to the skin. This product comes in an aerosol spray, and it can be sprayed on clothing, outdoor gear and finished surfaces.
So, you’ll want to ensure you use clothing that is meant for hiking or walks so that the repellent isn’t on your baby’s skin often.
This product protects against:
- Yellow fever mosquitoes
- General mosquitoes
Ideal for hunting, this long-lasting spray is designed to be odorless, so it won’t be a trigger for animals that smell a hunter coming and frolic off.
And this product is cheap.
What’s interesting is this is also a mosquito killer. The pest will either be repelled by the Permethrin in the product, or it will absorb into the insect, killing it.
- The industry’s longest-lasting repellent
- Doesn’t stain or damage fabric
- Needs to be applied with caution
- Can irritate the skin of some users
Some people have sensitive skin, and when this repellent is on their skin, they’ll get rashes. A good trick is to apply the repellent using a pair of gloves. If you plan on using this repellent on baby clothes, you may want to apply and then wash the fabric.
Always remain diligent when using any form of bug or mosquito repellent on or near a child, as they can get rashes or suffer from worse side effects.Buy Now

Burgess 1443 offers the best mosquito repellent for yards. This mosquito fogger is what professionals use in the field, and it’s affordable, so you can use it in your yard, too. This acts as a repellent, and it will also kill any mosquitoes that it comes in contact with.
This is meant for your yard, so it’s not a small mosquito spray that can be applied to your gear.
Think of this as a fogger you would put in your yard 5 minutes before you were going to throw a big outside party. See, this unit can fog up to 5,000 square feet on average, and you can reenter the treated area in as little as five minutes.
You need to make sure the fog has dissipated, so keep your pets and kids inside and allow 5 -10 minutes before reentering the space.
When you use this product, it will kill all flying insects and mosquitoes in the area. The fog also keeps working for a period of six hours, so you’ll benefit from all flying pests being kept away during your big bash.Buy Now
This unit can protect a 15-foot x 15-foot area or zone.
Small and compact, this cordless electronic creates a zone of protection around the area and is silent. There is almost no odor released during operation either, but it keeps these bugs away, including:
- Black flies
Other flying insects don’t enter the zone either.
This is what you want to have outdoors when you’re camping or hunting. A single butane cartridge is needed, and the unit can last up to 12 hours on one cartridge.
A mosquito repellent mat is provided, three in total, and you’ll need to refill these as necessary.
What happens with this product is that the mats are heated through the cordless device. Allethrin is emitted from the mats, causing a natural repellent in flowers to be released into the air and warded off.
No open flame is provided, so you don’t need to worry about potential fire hazards.
- Works for up to 12 hours on butane refills
- Creates a 225-sq. ft. zone of protection
- Effective and long-lasting
- Keep away from pets
- Not as effective in high winds
You don’t want your pets to get close to the mat. It’s best to keep your pets away at all times when using this product for added safety.
If the wind levels are high, the breeze seems to make this repellent less effective. But when the weather isn’t to breezy, this is a hands-free, spray-free product that is highly effective at keeping mosquitoes at bay.Buy Now

6 Best Homemade Mosquito Repellent 2018
If you want to know how to get rid of a mosquito that’s terrorizing your home, you’ll find that there are numerous homemade options that work well, too. Commercial products are often meant to be used when outdoors where the threat of mosquitoes is higher.
Everyone has had one or two of these pests in their home, and it’s almost impossible not to find them flying about outside.
The good news is that there are homemade repellents that work just as well.
1. Homemade Lemon Eucalyptus Spray
Remember all those great sprays listed above? Well, you can make your own spray, too. There’s only a few items you’ll need to get started:
- Lemon eucalyptus oil
- Sunflower oil
Now, you’ll want to add 1 drop of lemon eucalyptus oil to 10 drops of sunflower oil. If you find that the spray is too concentrated, add water to dilute the mixture. Rub or spray the mixture on your skin and the mosquitoes will fly the other way.
2. Listerine Mosquito Repellent
There’s an old rumor that Listerine for mosquitoes is highly effective. A lot of homemade mosquito repellent Listerine variations exist, and the issue is with the validity of the claims. This mouthwash wasn’t designed to repel mosquitoes, and there are claims that people sprayed this substance on windows to kill these pests.
Does Listerine keep mosquitoes away?
When they’re nearby, it seems to work somewhat. The issue is that this mouthwash is made from water and alcohol, so it will evaporate quickly.
Even when applied to the skin, it works for a very short period of time. The concentration of essential oils in the mouthwash are what you want to look for if you want this method to work. Eucalyptol is found in many Listerine products, and this is what keeps mosquitoes away.
So, it’s slightly effective if you can spray the mosquito directly, or if the spray is near the mosquito within the first few minutes.
Don’t dilute the Listerine.
This is the best mosquito yard spray mouthwash, but you’ll have better results with other methods.
3. Beer Trap
This is a sin for a beer drinker, but mosquitoes love beer. If you leave a glass of beer sitting on your outside table, the mosquitoes will be attracted to the smell and dive to their death. The problem is that no one wants to waste a good beer.
So, use this method with beer you don’t plan on drinking or cheap beer.
A cheap beer is best.
Simply place the beer bottles or open cans around the patio and allow the mosquitoes to dive into the beer.
Note: If you’ve been drinking, mosquitoes will be attracted to the smell of beer you emit. And this will cause you to suffer additional bites.
4. Eat a Lot of Garlic
A meal that is heavy on garlic is said to repel a slew of pests, including mosquitoes. How effective is this method? It’s very effective, and you’ll find that many commercial repellents include garlic in their ingredients list.
Eat the garlic prior to going out in the garden to landscape, and you’ll find that the mosquitoes smell the garlic and stay away.
The only issue is that you need to eat a lot of garlic for this method to work for a long period.
5. Dryer Sheet Method
An interesting method that does work – we tested it – was to grab a fabric softener sheet (Bounce) and rub it on our skin. The mosquitoes kept away for the entire evening, and we smelled good, too.
If your skin is very sensitive or you’re allergic to the sheets, this may not be the best method for you. Some people will suffer from skin irritation when using this method.
6. Soap Dish Method
A method you can employ today. This method requires:
- Dish soap
- Soap dish or saucer
Simply add a generous amount of soap into the saucer, and the mosquitoes will still away. It’s a simplistic method, but the mosquitoes don’t enjoy the smell, so they tend to stay away from the dish.
This is a good method when sitting at a table outside, and is just as effective as the tried and true citronella candle.
Mosquitoes can be controlled and repelled using any of the six natural methods or seven commercial methods to get rid of mosquitoes.
